Since the Local Youth Advisory Board last met, I have mainly focused on bringing Souper Bowl of Caring back to Spring Valley High and on getting organizations to sign up for the Service Blitz. Overall, however, I have 'tapped into' the spheres of influence of church, school (clubs and broader administration), and experience in the community. In this way, volunteers from Eastminster Presbyterian Church youth group plan and are excited to participate in the Service Blitz, and the church as a whole will hold a collection for a chosen organization on Souper Bowl Sunday.
At school, I have used club leadership positions so that Spring Valley's Beta Club, Latin Club, and Call 2 Action Club all plan on participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring collection time. I will also meet with Spring Valley's Principal and the Student Activities Director again in order to hash out the specific details of a school-wide collection and fundraiser. I plan on selling cutouts (similar to those seen in grocery stores) to be posted around the school; members of the aforementioned clubs would help to sell the cutouts for a dollar or two apiece, all of the money going to a chosen organization through Souper Bowl.
Finally, I have contacted area charities including Transitions, Hannah House, Cooperative Ministries, Oliver Gospel Mission, and St. Lawrence Place about the Service Blitz. So far, Transitions, St. Lawrence Place, and Cooperative Ministries have signed up, but I recently emailed the others as a follow up.
Because most Columbia organizations are familiar with Souper Bowl of Caring, I have run into minimal 'roadblocks,' if any. Also, if Souper Bowl has small collection boxes that can be placed in classrooms, I may need those. Otherwise, I can get something else that works.
