How did you hear of Souper Bowl of Caring? The Souper Bowl was an event that the Outreach program at my organization successfully did in the past.
Why did you choose to join the Souper Bowl of Caring team? Our organization is the primary transit system in Allegany County. Due to this, our bus stops include some local food pantries from around the area. Many of our riders use our buses to travel to these locations, so we thought it would be a good idea to give back to our partnering organizations that do such a great job helping our riders as well as the community as a whole.
What does your group do to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring movement?Every year since 2012 we have held an annual Souper Bowl event the Saturday before the big Super Bowl Game. We partner with local grocery food markets and banks to collect donations the week following the big event. As a transportation organization we also bring out our big buses to try and fill them with canned foods and attract people into donating.
What have you found is most successful for raising cash and food items? What our organization has found to be helpful is marketing the event with flyers at local business and a prominent social media presence. This year we held our event at the Tops Friendly Market in Wellsville, NY. At Tops we dispersed flyers with a grocery list of non-perishable food items that were on sale. Customers at Tops seemed to find this convenient and very helpful.
Was there any particularly meaningful or moving story from your collection you would like to share? One of the organizations that we donated to was, Cuba Cultural Center, Inc, and they stated that "Many thanks to Access Allegany and the various businesses which offered to serve as donation locations for this year's Souper Bowl event. Thanks too to everyone who donated food last Saturday. Because of your generosity, the Center received over 300 pounds of food to distribute to struggling families in our area. Way to go!"
Tell us a little about where you donate your collection to.The Cuba Cultural Center is a not-for profit based in Cuba, New York. Their mission is to "Provide for the spiritual, emotional, and temporal needs of the people of Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties." The Cuba Cultural Center holds a monthly distribution from their food pantry every month for all residents of Allegany County.
Catholic Charities in Wellsville NY serves their clients through food pantries and soup kitchens. Catholic Charities also provides other services such as personal and professional development for their community members.
Hart Comfort House is a hospice care home. The home successfully runs with the dedication of its volunteers and is designed to be a welcoming and comforting place for those in their last three months of a terminal illness and their families.
ACCORD Corporations in Belmont NY provides an emergency Food Pantry program that gives a 7- 10 day supply of nutritious food every 60 days. In 2014, the number of food pantry visitors reached 1,624 by the end of the year.
Are there any resources you feel Souper Bowl of Caring could develop to enhance your collection?Marketing literature specific to the Souper Bowl of Caring.
What does participating in Souper Bowl of Caring mean to your group? At Ardent Solutions our mission is "to create synergy within and between systems, organizations, families and individuals that result in a strong culture of health and quality services for our communities." Hunger is a serious issue in our county that no one can ignore and the Souper Bowl of Caring event allows us to give back to the community we serve in a meaningful way.
What does it mean to you?As an AmeriCorps Alum I loved the idea of giving back to the community especially in a way that promotes our local food pantries. The Souper Bowl is not only good for the people it serves but also helps to garner action and service amongst the community at large.
